Subject: [SCT-ISLAY] Islay Gleanings McMurchy's of Argylshire and Nicholsons of Skye

I found a book in the local library about Huron Twp. Families around the
Town of Ripley.

I note that very prominent family in the book, which had a numerous pictures
going back a long ways is the McMurchy family of Argylshire. I'm not sure
where.

The oldest member seems to be John McMurchy Sr. and his wife Betsie who
emigrated in the early 1850's, along with bros. Angus and Donald and sisters
Mary McTaggart and Belle McfRae, and they took up 500 acres.

This is of some interest to me as I research the Nicholsons of Skye and John
McMurchy Jr. married Margaret Nicholson, the daughter of Norman Nicholson
and Anne Cameron of Skye.

There is a Picture of John McMurchy and his grandson Alexander, some of
their homes, a barn raising with a lot of people.

Note that this area has many members of the Isle of Lewis who were subject
to a Clearance.

The book is Families & Farms of Huron with it's Hub Ripley
