Hi Delegates !!
I have just returned from a gloriously sunny stay on Islay where Phil Hawkins, Tony Coxon and I sorted out the admin for the Gathering. It is going to be a good one and all delegates who have not paid the balance of the Conference monies should do so now to Phil as per the website.
Phil will email shortly to all delegates and their accompanying non- delegates to ask for dates of arrival ,address in Islay, whether you will use a hire car and other pertinent details so that we can make a transport plan etc.
The programme is taking shape. David Caldwell will be with us and we are hoping that his colleagues Roger McWee and Nigel Ruckley will also make an important contribution. We have asked Dr Margaret Storrie to address us on the socio-history of Islay and she hopes to be able to fit it in to a very busy Summer programme of commitments. I still await confirmation from her.. and will issue the programme on the website as soon as it is firm.
We would like to commemorate our presence in Islay and Toni Sinclair has suggested a Family Album that could be placed in the Museum of Islay Life and in the Family History Society Archives suitably ring-bound. This suggestion has our very strong support here and I leave it to Tony to explain:
Dear fellow "Returners"
Now that the Return of the Children is only a few months away, the thought struck me that we should do something together to mark this once-in-a-lifetime event.
My idea is that each of us contribute a history of our Islay family, including the names of those who left, where they lived, and where they emigrated (or migrated) to, etc. You can include photos, a family tree, or whatever you feel is appropriate to share. It isn't necessary to use any particular genealogy program, since many of us use different ones anyway. Just do whatever you feel capable of doing, with the time you have. After that, we can combine these histories into a binder to make a "Family Album".
Valerie Macfarlane, who is an artist, has offered to oversee an appropriate cover. I'll be happy to type up an index, once we know the names of the families which are to be listed. We can also add some group photos of our gathering.
Actually, it would be nice if we each brought two copies so that one binder can be presented to the Museum of Islay Life, and the other to the Islay Family History Society. That way, they will always be available for other visitors or researchers to peruse.
I hope you agree with this plan, and that you will add your ancestors' histories to this book. It will be a lasting memorial that really symbolizes the Return of Islay's Children.
Looking forward to finally meeting all of you!
Toni Sinclair
