Hello fellow Mull researchers:
I have a completely documented history for a Livingston(e) family from Mull
and Grey County, Ontario.
It does, of course, include marriages with other very common Mull family
names. I usually write the (e) in brackets, because the first generation
spelled without, but in the second, even the same person, sometimes wrote
it with, and sometimes without. By about the third generation, it seemed
to stay!!
DONALD LIVINGSTONE born about 1776, Mull, died 1851, Ardfenaig
married about 1804, Mull, to
CIRSTY CAMPBELL, born about 1778, Mull, died after 1851, Knockan (seems to
have also been known as Christy, and Catherine)
They were a poor crofter family and moved around quite a lot - Asopol,
Ardfenaig, Knockan, and Kilfinichen.
They had seven children, four of whom were sons who immigrated to Grey
County, Ontario, Canada between 1845 - 1855.
NEIL LIVINGSTON, born 1805, Kilfinichen, Mull - of which nothing further is
know - and for whom I would dearly love to track down descendants.
JANE LIVINGSTON, born 1807, Kilfinichen, died 1872, Kilpatrick, buried in
Kilpatrick Graveyard, where she has a lovely tall tombstone. (would someone
be able to check that cemetery for me?)
married about 1840, Mull, to
WILLIAN VASS, born about 1816, Blackhills, Ross, died after 1881.
The couple had six children before Jane died, and William Vass then married
MARION NICHOLSON SUTHERLAND and they had three children.
HUGH LIVINGSTON, born 1809, Kilfinichen, died 1883, Grey County, Ontario,
Canada
married about 1844, to, (not known if married in Scotland or Canada)
MARGARET McQUARRIE, born about 1816, died 1894, Grey County, Ontario,
canada
Hugh and Margaret had ten children, born in Vaughan Township and Bentinck
Townships, Ontario
We are descended from this line. Hugh was the first brother to come to
Canada, in 1845.
ALEXANDER LIVINGSTON, born 1811, Kilfinichen, died 1886, Grey County,
Ontario, Canada
married about 1848, Mull, to
ANNIE McQUARRIE, born about 1826, Mull, died 1907, Grey County, Ontario,
Canada
Alexander and Annie had three children in Scotland, where they farmed at
Ardtun, before coming to Canada in in 1855, and added four more children in
Grey County.
JOHN LIVINGSTON, born 1814, Kilfinichen, died 1883, Grey County, Ontario,
Canada
married about 1840, Mull, to
CATHERINE CAMPBELL, born about 1814, Mull, died Grey County, Ontario,
Canada
John and Catherine had four children while living in Ardfenaig, came to
Grey County, Ontario in 1850, and added two more children.
DUNCAN LIVINGSTON, born 1817, Mull, died 1870, Grey County, Ontario, Canada
married 14 March 1848, Iona, Scotland, to
ANN McPHAIL, born 1821, Scotland, died 1882, Grey County, Ontario, Canada.
Duncan was listed as a servant at Fidden when he and Ann married. Duncan
and Ann came to Grey County in 1849, but they left no descendants.
CIRSTY LIVINGSTON, born 1824, Kilfinichen, died after 1851, Knockan, Mull.
Expect she may have never married - was listed as a 'pauper' on the 1851
Knockan census.
Listed on the 1779 Register of Argyll Inhabitants was a NEIL LIVINGSTON,
keeper, age 40, with a son Donald, age 2 and son Angus, age 4, his wife,
mother and daughters (4 females, who unfortunately didn't deserve
listing!!!!) They were living at Sheabach. This Neil Livingstone could
well be the father of the original Donald listed at the beginning of this
history. We do know that our Livingstone branch is NOT connected with Dr.
David Livingstone, unless it was in earlier generations.
The four Livingstone brothers who immigrated to Bentinck and Glenelg
Townships in Grey County, Ontario, all farmed there, and there are
descendants of three of them, still residing there today. Much of this
information is also available on the Mull Family History web page so
efficiently maintained by Ian Phillips.
The complete history, including information on Mull and Grey County,
Ontario, can be found in the book "A Line of Livingston(e)s from Mull
Scotland to Grey and Halton Counties, Ontario, Canada". Copies of this
book are in the Bruce/Grey Genealogical Collection at the Owen Sound
Library, The Ontario Genealogical Soceity Collection in Toronto, Ontario,
The Glasgow and West of Scotland Family History Society collection in the
Mitchell Library, Glasgow, and the Highland Family History Society at
Inverness (I think). I no longer have any more copies of the book, but I
would be pleased to supply further information.
