My gg. grandfather, John McLean, left Bentinck Township in 1871 with his family
and settled on Mantoulin Island. His brother Neil and his cousin, also a John
McLean, did likewise. Neil's wife was a Mary McKechnie, also from Mull. There
were a number of Mull people who settled in mainland Ontario (Grey Co, etc. ) in
the 1850's and then they or their children relocated to Manitoulin and the next
generation in many cases went west to North Dakota, etc. (including my gg.
grandfather's daughter and her family), I have quite a bit of information at
home re: Manitoulin from 1870--1900--census records and histories of early
families.

First of all, the address for John should read: The Slash, Manitoulin Island.
The Slash was an area on the south end of the island so named because a forest
fire had burned through it, leaving cleared land for the early settlers. It is
in Assiginack Township. I will look in the census records for the names
mentioned in the letter, etc. get back to you or to Roy directly.

If anyone else has Mull/Manitoulin connections, let me know.
