Here are the Pennygown memorial inscriptions. This is a fascinating
cemetery as it contains the grave slabs of the only bad Lord of Duart and
his Lady, who were denied interrment in the chapel because they dabbled in
witchcraft.
PENNYGOWN Memorial Inscriptions
Erected by John MCDONALD Joiner Salen in memory of Ann CURRY his spouse who
died on 24th July 1859 aged 47 years; Also John CURRIE her father who died
on the 22nd September 1828 aged 70 years.
In memory of John MACPHAIL late farmer Glenbyre who died 5th November 1842
aged 33 years and of Isabella STUART his wife who died 17th July 1856 aged
42 years.
In memory of Archibald MACPHAIL late farmer Kilbeg who died 9th August 1837
aged 56 years. And of Anne MCPHERSON his wife who died 26th March 1875 aged
87 years.
Sacred to the memory of Donald MCPHAIL farmer and cattle dealer Glenforsa
who died July 1836 aged 90 years. Also Sarah FLETCHER his wife who died in
the year 1800 aged 45 years. Erected by his sons John MCPHAIL Tiroran and
Duncan MCPHAIL Scalasdale. The said Donald MCPHAILs ancestors were in
Glenforsa for upwards of 800 years.
Erected by Thomas MILLER farmer Killechronan Aros in memory of his father,
mother and sisters. Catherine his sister died 25th March 1860 aged 7
years, Cecilia HENDERSON his mother on 23rd May 1873 aged 57, Mary his
sister on the 19th December 1875 aged 32 years. Andrew MILLER his father on
16th May 1877 aged 73 years.
In memory of Mary McKINNON who died July 16th 1822 aged 7(3 or 5?) years.

Erected by Duncan MACARTHUR Merchant Newton Ardnamurghan in memory of his
father Robert MACARTHUR late tenant Ensay who died at Haunn on 7th October
1880 aged 81; and also of his grandmother Chirsty MCINNES who died at Ensay
on 1?th October 1853 aged 84.
In memorium John LIVINGSTONE died 26th October 1894 aged 66; Donald
LIVINGSTONE died 30th April 1898 aged 41; Mary MCPHAIL died 29th January
1913 aged 78; ANNIE LIVINGSTONE died 2nd January 1939 aged 79 of Scallasdale
Craignure.
Sacred to the memory of Donald MACALPINE who met his death accidentally on
board the Corinthian at Glasgow Harvour October 19th 1870 in his 22nd year.
He was lamented by all who knew him. Erected by his sorrowing mother.
Sacred to the memory of John, second son of Ludovick CAMERON Writer and
Alice MACNICOL his wife born at Inverary 20th March 1827 died at Tirorain
Mull 2nd January 1854.
In memory of Andrew MACLEAN Surgeon in Mull who died 18th October 179? aged
47 years.
Sacred to the memory of Donald MACLAINE late tenant of Balmeanach (?) who
died on 20th ? 1804 aged 60 years and of Ellen his wife who died 4th
February 1821 aged 75 years.
In loving memory of John MACPHAIL died at Fishnish 20th May 1877 aged 56
years. Also his beloved wife Janet MACLEAN died at Fishnish ... February
1907 aged 72 years; Also John Macphail STEWART, grandson of the above died
of wounds in France on 24th April 1918 aged 24 years. In memory ever dear.

In memory of Mary Anne MACCALLUM died 23rd June, 1?[assume 9]02 aged 22
years ..............daughter of Rev. Colin MACCALLUM Parish Minister of

Erected by James MORTON, Covan, in memory of his beloved wife Mary MCLEAN
who died 15th November 1874 aged 24 years.
In affectionate remembrance of Lachlan MCINNES who died at Aros Mains 16th
May 1897 aged 76 and his daughter Mary MCLEAN who died 6th February 1894
aged 24 years. Also his wife Mary MACPHAIL who died 22nd August 1920;
Katherine CARMICHAEL who died 12th February 1962 [plus other modern ones]
Here lies interred the body of Duncan MACMILLAN son to Murdoch MACMILLAN and
Sarah MCLEAN Killieg who died ..th December 1803 aged 16 years and 9 months.
Erected by Lachlan MACQUARRIE in memory of his son Charles MACQUARRIE who
died at Tobermory on 1st November 1874 aged 11 years. Also the above
Lachlan MACQUARRIE who died 18th October 1889 aged 72 years.
Also Flora MACLEAN wife of Duncan MACQUARRIE who died 10th December 1967
aged 95 years; Also Betsy FRASER daughter of Janet MACQUARRIE who died 23rd
February 1976 aged 89.
Also his wife Betsy MACDOUGALL who died 17th October 1904 aged 84; their
sons Duncan MACQUARRIE died 19th May 1920 aged 57; Lachlan MACQUARRIE died
3rd July 1937 aged 78; their daughter Janet MACQUARRIE died 15th February
1938 aged 81.
For those who don't have a map of Mull, Pennygown is on the east coast of
the island, south of Salen but north of Craignure.
