I have Michael Brander's book, Diana Henderson's and various tomes on the
Peninsular Wars (in an effort to find something about Murdoch 20th of
Lochbuy, and Charles Macquarie), but can never find any information specific
to Mull in any of them, whereas there is quite a lot in Lochbuy letters
about the negative side of recruitment such as the difficulty Murdoch 19th
and others had with the Mull people refusing to serve. The names of those
who did serve in the American War of Independence in Murdoch 19th's
battalion are available, but I haven't come across any lists of tenants or
cottars from Mull serving in the Napoleonic Wars. We have the well-known
list of officers for Mull, as prepared by Alexander Maclean of Pennycross *,
and published in MacCormick's ISLAND OF MULL, but I know of no listing of
the ranks. MacCormick says : " The rank and file, could they be traced,
would have made a formidable array; for it is admissible to suppose that
many were followed to the army by young recruits from their townships." But
a lot of research has been done since John MacCormick's day. Has anyone
found such a thing, even for individual estates ? Jo.
* Names of Mull officers of regiments and other bodies in this list include
57th, 42nd, Cavalry, Marines, HEIC, 31st, West Indies Regt., Rifles, Argyll
Fencibles, 90th, 6th, 74th, Royal Navy, 93rd, 91st, 86th, 56th, 79th, 84th,
24th, Royals, 95th, 69th, Canadians, 76th, 55th, Dragoons, 80th, 21st, 92nd,
80th, 64th, Foot Guards, Light Cavalry, 72nd, 71st, 60th, 73rd, 20th, 2nd &
7th Dragoons, 75th, Artillery, Guards.
