I have to rely on my own transcription of those double slashes // and single
slashes / which mark out the difference between the nuclear family and its
associated residents, and a completely new family altogether, in the 1841
census, and they certainly might slip a bit now and again. But I do have
John Campbell in Ardalanish with his wife Mary McGilvra, with 5 children
then the double slash poised before 85-year-old Margaret's name, and at the
same moment, Ardalanish turns into Knocknafenaig, which may or may not be
the actual boundary of the two places, but as they run into each other, and
Knocknafenaig was later absorbed into Ardalanish farm, seems unproblematic
[then you get this name Crow Hill = Hill of the Crow = Knock-na-fenaig, then
with Rory Beaton we are back in Ardalanish again ]. When you look at the
arrangement of houses and ruins today you can see how the enumerator dodged
about. Martin Campbell I definitely have in Ardchiavaig, at the Uisken end
of the township if the enumerator was walking from west to east. So this
70-year-old Margaret is definitely right inside the main family, coming
after her daughter-in-law and before the eight children in the list. This
would appear to make this Margaret a definite Granny, whereas the Granny
following after John's family would appear to have the 1841 equivalent of a
Granny-flat. Yours, Jo
