Dear Jean,
It looks as if you are going to join the enchanted circle of McPhails in
addition to all your other Mull family names - McCallum, McLean, Campbell &
Co. In Salen QS OPR there is a baptism on 15 Jan 1829 to Thomas Scott in
Knock and Catherine McPhail his spouse of their ld Margaret. Then a group of
baptisms is inserted into the OPR (which is quite frankly a bit of a mess -
I think maybe Mr Thomas Duff has a lot to answer for as session clerk - or
maybe his predecessor) which gives
28 Jul. 1832 Jane dau. of Thos. Scott Knock & Catherine McPhail; 8 Jan. 1835
Nancy dau. of Thos. Scott Knock & Catherine McPhail; 30 Nov. 1837 Catherine
dau. of Thos. Scott, Knock & Catherine McPhail. In the 1861 census of
Tobermory in the Established Female Schoolhouse we have Catherine Scott,
Head, unm. 23 Teacher, b. Argyll, Torosay. John Wright May, Head [ yes 2
Heads of household !] married 26 Writer, b. Fife, Dunfermline, then a
servant and a dressmaker called Catherine McInnes, visitor 20.
I don't have the marriage of Colin Campbell and Catherine Scott - YET ! I
agree 'Laing' is prob. Luing. There are so many Colin Campbells in my
collection that without his age or d.o.b. I can't pick him out if I did have
him. And an 1865 marriage ( CRM ) would certainly give the parents.
But meantime, I am sure that Merryn, Margaret, Jane, Bob, Katherine, and
especially Alison G. will join me in welcoming you to the McPhail team !!
Dh' ol sinn do dheoch Slainte ! Jo.

PS. I DO have Colin Campbell after all, but just that he is in 1871 census
aged 34 as the blacksmith at Lochdonhead born Tiree with Catherine his wife
b. Torosay, Thomas Scott Campbell his son aged 5 b. Isle of Man, Christina
his dau. 4 b. Torosay, Catherine his dau. 2 b. Torosay, Donald his son aged
3 months and Catherine McKinnon servant 72 b. Torosay.
Jean, you'll be scuttling off to the Isle of Man and Tiree this summer
before we can catch you, if I know you.
