Dear John,

This would seem to be the right couple, given that ages were rounded down in
the 1841 census. They are at Cross Street, south of Argyll Terrace,
Tobermory:

Archibald BEATON/50/Boatman
Cathrine BEATON/45
Jessie/11
Cathrine/7
[fairly obviously the older children have left home or are working
elsewhere]

So it looks as though you have a couple of siblings for your John. They
are gone by the 1851 census.

There are heaps of BEATONs at Dervaig, in Kilninian & Kilmore, worth
considering if you are looking for Archibald's parents.

1841 Dervaig:
Donald BEATON/70/Farmer
Margaret BEATON/65

Roderick BEATON/60/Wool Hand Loom Weaver
Janet BEATON/18
Lachlan BEATON/15

Hugh BEATON/35/Farmer
Mary BEATON/25
Rachel BEATON/66
Margery BEATON/35
Margaret BEATON/12

John BEATON/45/Farmer
Mary BEATON/45
Neil BEATON/10
Margaret BEATON/8
Marion BEATON/6

Donald BEATON/55/Farmer
Catherine BEATON/60
Christina BEATON/55

Malcolm BEATON/40/Wool handloom weaver
Janet BEATON/35
Marion BEATON/9
Charles BEATON/1
Lachlan BEATON/11

Also found an Archibald McNEIL/45/Farmer in the 1841 at Dervaig. And a
Catherine MacNEILL/60/in a separate listing.

Also Kilninian & Kilmore:
at Balligown:
Mary BEATON/no age given

at Calgary:
Donald BEATON/18/male servant

at Fanmore:
John BEATON/42/Farmer
Janet BEATON/17
Christina BEATON/15
Angus BEATON/13
Mary BEATON/11
Donald BEATON/8
James BEATON/6
John BEATON/2
Ann BEATON/1

at Penmore:
Donald BEATON/20/Farmer
Marion BEATON/45
Lauchlan BEATON/15
John BEATON/13
Donald BEATON/9
Peggy BEATON/20
Cathrine BEATON/15
Ann BEATON/12
Alexander BEATON/1

at Achnasaul:
Donald BEATON/35/Ag. labourer
Mary BEATON/30
Flora BEATON/5
Mary BEATON/4
Marion BEATON/2
Roderick BEATON/10
Lachlan BEATON/30/Agric. lab.

The 1841 Census BEATONs in Tobermory Division are:

at Strongarve
Catherine BEATON/30/Spinster (this probably meant she spun rather than
relating to her marital status)

at Portmore
Sally BEATON/25/Female Servant/not born in Tobermory [Sally is
interchangeable with Marion and Sarah]
Ann BEATON/25/female servant/not born in county
Catherine BEATON/15/female servant/born in county

at Argyll Terrace:
John BEATON/35/Mason
Sally BEATON/40
Flora BEATON/11
James BEATON/5
Angus BEATON/3
Archibald BEATON/6 months
[this family is still in Argyll Terrace in the 1851, with a few more details
John BEATON/46/mason
Sally BEATON/48/wife/born Ardnamurchan
James BEATON/14/son
Angus BEATON/12/son

1841 Argyll Terrace:
Catherine BEATON/95
[they sometimes exaggerated their age. She is in the household of Dugald
McDOUGAL/75/Feuer and Isabella McDOUGAL/65

1841 High Street, Tobermory:
Cathrine BEATON/40
Donald BEATON/15
Flora BEATON/13
Sally BEATON/11
Mary BEATON/9
John BEATON/5
[in the 1851 census this family is at McKenzie Street, Tobermory:
Cathrine/54/widow of seaman/born Morvern
Donald/24/unmarried son/seaman
Flora/22/unmarried daughter/servant
John/14/son
Allan/2/grandson

and, of course, Archibald and Catherine as detailed above.

In the 1851 census for Tobermory, there is another lot of Beatons at
Argyll Terrace, Sth Side;
James BEATON/34/seaman
Flora BEATON/31/wife/born Morvern
Ketty BEATON/6/daughter
Flory BEATON/3/daughter
Margaret BEATON/6 months/daughter.

[I think this family is the one in the Tobermory grave with headstone:
Erected by Captain James BEATON of Tobermory imo his beloved daughters
(Mrs?) Flora ROBERTSON who died 5th April 1870 aged 21 years, Catherine
BEATON who died 2nd December 1873 aged 27 years; Margaret BEATON who died
14th December 1873 aged 22 years]

Hope this helps. I'd definitely be appealing for help with the Tobermory
BEATONs from others on the list.

Cheers, Jill
