Dear John,
I checked the Tobermory section of the 1841 census for your Hector and found
the following: Remember that ages were rounded down to the nearest 5 and no
relationships are shown. All these McDougalls are shown as born in the same
district as the census, so I am not sure that the Hector here is yours if he
was born on Coll. Mind you, the census records are notoriously unreliable,
so I wouldn't rule him out either.
at Portmore of Tobermory

These are the only McDougalls. Unfortunately I do not have access to Tyree
or Coll census records.
I had a quick look at the 1851 again at Breast (this is the street on the
waterfront) and it looks as though Hector died as Elizabeth McDougall aged
52, widow, is shown as spirit dealer, with daughters Ann aged 19 and Mary
aged 15. Elizabeth is shown as head of household, and also in the house are
Ann MacPhee, 34, sister, seaman's wife, and Colin MacPhee aged 2, nephew,
with Mary MacDonald aged 22, servant (born Kilmore).
Hope this helps.
Jill
