Isle of Mull list:
I am back one more generation with the death certificate of my
GGGrandfather, Niel Lamont who died 7JUN1855 at age 35 in Tobermory. It
lists his parents as Donald Lamont and Catherine McDonald.
>From the IGI, I can see Julian Lamont or McDonald chr. 24FEB1821 Kilfinichen
to Donald Lamont and Catherine McDonald and then Anne Lamont Chr. 24APR1824
Kilinian to Donald Lamont and Mary McDonald.
In the 1841 Census at Tobermory on Breadalbane I think I have the
family(thank you Jean Whimp): Mary Lamont 40 Y, Niel 20 Y, Catherine 12,
Flora 7, Donald 5, and Ann Lamont 50. And then I have Niel Lamont's marriage
to Jane Campbell 21JAN1851(Kilninian & Kilmore-Tobermory) & his daughter
Mary Lamont's marriage to Andrew Christie of Port Glasgow on 6SEPT1877 at
Tobermory and into the future.
They were fisherman and laborers...so might not appear in any documents. I
am actually going to be able to go to Mull for 2 days in early April....and
if you should have any more on this family I would really appreciate it. I
will be coming up by train & then I guess ferry from a girlfriends(she is
not into genealogy but is game and coming with me) in Newark-on-Trent
England. At this point I thought I would just wander the cemeteries in
Tobermory and get the feel of the place since I really don't know how to get
back any further since Niel Lamont's birth is not in the OPR's of Argyle and
the only marriage of his parents that comes close is from the OPR: 14MAR1815
Kilninian & Kilmore Donald Lamont and Mary McDonald. Could Catherine and
Mary be the same person...sort of like Mary Catherine?
I do want to thank the list and Jo Currie for your wonderful books about
Mull that have really inspired me to try to take this further!
Any helpful hints about how best to spend 2 days on Mull ( I know it is not
enough!!!) please reply.
