Janet,
That's the rub... the term 'legitimate Hanoverian government' is ultimately
a political analysis which most Old Order Gaels did not accept. Only right
of conquest implemented the rule of the Hanoverian regime. The matter is
subjective not objective. For instance I know plenty of Gaels that still
feel as though the Stewarts were the 'legitimate' ruling line. On both
sides of the usige mór.
My poor humble lot were already gone before 1745 so it is a moot point with
my group.
I do think it is interesting that the topic is still one around today.
Showing indeed long memories do exist among the Gael. While, given the
history of the Hanoverians in the Gaeltacht, I can say a single word
complimentary toward them, they were thugs and murderers plain and simple.
The main problem I have with the Jacobites is the abysmal character of the
Stewarts family. James II was known in Gaelic as Seamus Caca.... this mind
you from the men that fought for him. However even given this, I know I
would have taken arms up for the Stewarts myself, in spite of know how awful
they were.
Interesting topic though
B McCain
