Hi Ida,
Thanks for responding. We grew up thinking that James was illegitimate and
that his father was the Duke of Argyll. I hired Patricia Martin from
England to do some research for me back in 2002. She found that James was
not illegitimate and that his parents were Duncan and Ann McCormick. That
he enlisted under the name of James MacCormick in 1862 - serving about 10
years before deserting and marrying his wife, Prudential Arnott on 20 July
1872 in Wakefield, MA, USA, using his mother's maiden name.
Prudential was the daughter of Alexander Arnott, RSM of the British Army and
his wife, Catherine Austin. Alexander was born in the Parish of Barney near
the Town of Lanark in the county of Lanark. This is according to his
enlistment papers. Born around 1834/5 which is also from his enlistment
papers. Alexander and Catherine were married on 31 Oct 1855 in Glasgow.
This is from the 1855 Marriages in the District of Calton in the Burgh of
Glasgow. His age is listed as 28 - which gives a different DOB than his
enlistment papers. Catherine died 29 Sept 1889 in East Boston, MA. She was
only 56. Her husband Alexander was still alive. I have been looking for
his date of death and where they are buried.
James applied for citizenship in Boston, MA in 1886. His information states
that he was born in Island of Mull Scotland on 3 March 1872. His marriage
certificate states that his father was Duncan and mother was Ann. James and
Prudential eventually had 14 children but only 9 lived. They finally
settled in Boston, MA after traveling down to New Jersey where their first
child was born. There were many Scots in New Jersey but they came back to
Boston where he worked as a potter.
I found the Banns of marriage for Duncan McCormick and Ann Livingston in the
OPR. They were married on 26 Feb 1829. I'm not sure if they were married
in Creich or if she came from there. The records are from the Parish of
Kilfinchen & Kilvickeon.
I will go over what you have sent me to see if I can find any more
information. I will have to do more research - just can't afford to do it
by hiring someone. My nephews were in Scotland last Spring and the older
one wants to go back. At that time he hopes to do some research for me.
Thanks for your note. I have been working on this side of the family for
many years!!!
Kathy
