Hello All
I have been lurking for several weeks and finally decided that I had to
speak to all of you. Your site is lively and informative.
I am a volunteer researcher at the New England Historic Genealogical
Society, and I have been trying to prove the stories about Mull ancestors I have
heard all my life. I have hit a brick wall but will keep trying.
Thank you, Elaine, for the Why Genealogy posting.
Here is my brick wall. My great, great grandfather Charles Ewart was born
1835 in Scotland, supposedly on Mull. He emigrated, and the first time I find
him is in the 1870s US census.
Name changes were not always done in court in the 19th century, so the name
was changed to Euart without fanfare before the end of the century.
According to family lore, the Ewarts were Catholic when they were in
Scotland, and they remained Catholic in the US. I know that there were few
Catholics on Mull, and I do not know where to go next. Any ideas you have would be
appreciated.
When I found out about all of you, my plan was to visit Mull this month, but
I am hardly ready to do any work with you. You are all so far ahead of me.
