Dear Listers

1.The Mull Museum and Copyright

I have not had time to read the list in recent days but after
trawling through many emails on copyright, the underpinning
principles of which surprised me, I came to the mention of McMillan.
I have addressed this below.

It would be very easy to check the issue of copyright on those
documents that are the property of individuals and those where
copyright is vested in the Crown. Some forms of copyright can also
lapse after a specified period of time. Not being acquainted with
Scottish Copyright Law - I cannot comment, but these issues are very
clear under Australian Law. Perhaps it suggests that there is a
place on the list for a comment on copyright and the need to cite
sources.

However, I might add that Jean Whittaker assisted me at the Museum
with my searches and I was most grateful for her time. Also, like
Jan Peasnell, I joined the Museum - it would seem to me that
membership is a small notional contribution and a vote of confidence
to the work of volunteers. I have emailed Jean some photos of my
family and I imagine that they remain my property or at least are
sourced as being my photos - but that issue seems to be at the basis
of the debate that is happening right now.

2.In relation to Donald McIlhagga's email of 18 July 2006 on
McMillan family connections:

Don, we met at the MUGG gathering and you may recall that I was the
only person seeming to be collecting information about the 'McMillan'
families on Mull.

What interests me about you message is the names - admittedly, the
naming patterns of many families were consistent and do enable you to
make some guesses about people's relationships - as a first clue to
following up information in more detail.

My direct McMillan (sometimes Macmillan) family came from Oskamull -
I have seen some records citing Corkamull too - but the shipping
records to Australia on the New Zealander in 1853 do cite Oskamull
and so do some census records. I was unaware that at one stage
Tobermory was in Kilmore and Kilninian Parish and so it is possibole
that McMillan people who I have rejected as being in the wrong place,
were in fact -= not only not far from the others, but in the same
parish. More to the point, the eldest son seems to be named John
McMillan in 3 generations in a row.

The family who came to Australia in 1853 were:
Parents - Archibald and Flora McMillan (nee McIntyre) - (I think
sponsored by Lord Strathallan) and their children were Ann, John,
Christy, Alexander and it would seem that there was a son Angus who
came first of all before them.

In the 1853 Census, there is a grandson with them in Oskamull - named
Angus McLean - and I have not been able to track down who the mother
and father of Angus might be. I was advised when I was in Mull, that
oftentimes women had babies before weddings took place and only when
they had proven their fertility would there be a marriage. So the
options would seem to be
(a) another McMillan daughter married before 1851 to McLean, or
(b) perahps Ann McMIllan had a son out of wedlock and the father was
a McLean.
This small boy Angus McLean did not travel with the family to
Portland, Victoria, Australia on the New Zealander in 1853.

It may be that we have some possible information to share - with
this McMillan connection.

Although I had a great time at MUGG - 1 and intend to do all that I
can to attend MUGG - 2 (whenever that happens), I was disappointed
that there was no other person seeking information on McMillans, and
I was not able to make any McIntyre connections either.

Regards
Libby McMillan ( - ongoing email address)
