IRELAND, MILLIGAN, M'CAIG, SPROAT

Many thanks to Ian for the info about the early newspapers for the town of
Kirkcudbright.

I emailed the "Reference and Local Studies Department" of the "Dumfries and
Galloway Libraries" and they searched the index for me of the Dumfries
Weekly Journal. Unfortunately there wasn't an obituary/death notice for my
John GLOVER, but the librarian did find an entry regarding the daughter of
my John, namely Agnes, and 2 other women, and he emailed me the full
transcript with the adage that should I desire a full printout it would
cost me GBP5 in a sterling cheque, and from OZ that would make a total of
about GBP10 ! I was impressed by the fact that he actually typed the
article for me.

I have included the article in full below as it makes great reading
despite its brevity

Dumfries Weekly Journal of 14th April 1801 reads as follows: "Thursday the
Court proceeded to the trial of Marion Milligan, daughter of John Milligan,
shoemaker in Kirkcudbright, Marion Ireland, alias M'Caig, relict of John
M'Caig, taylor in Kirkcudbright, and Agnes Glover, daughter of John Glover,
blacksmith there, accused of being concerned in a riot and mob in
Kirkcudbright, opposing the shipping of a quantity of potatoes, and of an
assault upon Thomas Sproat, a farmer in that neighbourhood. They having
been found guilty, upon their own confession, Marion Milligan and Marion
Ireland were sentenced to two months imprisonment in the tollbooth of
Dumfries and Agnes Glover to one months imprisonment in the tollbooth of
Kirkcudbright."

Thanks again to Ian as I now have this delightful extra to add to this
particular family's story.
