Hi Donna,
Again, don't know - some of those are doubtful. The Hendersons on my wife's
side are from Lanarkshire. The Young & Smith go together & are from South
Ayrshire (Maybole& Dailly). The Hunters, however, despite the high incidence
of that name in Ayrshire, are from Glasgow. Nothing is ever that simple!
I am, however, very interested in McKinstray/McKinstry/McKinstrey (or without
the Mc) & even McInnistrie in Galloway generally. We are tracing our
Maybole line back to Ulster (probably Antrim or Down) but it seems to be generally
recognised that this is a Scottish name. J.Bell's excellent website shows
lots of Kinstrays buried in Buittle. We have also seen references to Glenluce
and a book my wife found refers to a Marion McInnistrie as being a Baillie in
Newton Stewart in around 1512. This makes us suspect that the family moved
originally from Galloway to Ulster. Anything anyone comes across on this one
would be much appreciated.
Brian McKinstray
