Hello list,
I keep seeing the name John Brown go by in various postings & I cannot help
but mention what I am looking for, again...
My ancestor, ISABELLE BROWN, is listed in the Girthon parish records as born
in 1819, natural daughter of JOHN BROWN of Pulcree farm, a farm in Anworth,
and ELIZABETH CLARK.
I find in 1841 that a JOHN BROWN is living in Girthon at Academy Place approx
age 55, with sister Mary Ann, approx age 45, and a servant. Could this be
Isabelle's father? I get the impression of a man of some means - a land steward
is listed as his occupation. Lived next door (Cally Lake Cottages) to WILLIAM
CLARK & his daughter ELIZABETH. Could this be Isabella's mother, whom he
never married?
This same man is listed in 1851 as age 70, and his birthplace as Tinwald,
Dumfriesshire.
Elizabeth would have been only about 15 (although the census ages are
notoriously inexact in 1841) when she had Isabelle, if indeed she was the mother.
Any assistance gratefully received.
