You may need to revisit the book "Accompt of the Sheriffdom of Ranfrew"
compiled
>by W Hamilton in 1710 , and sort out the "s's" from the " f's"
For instance in the phrase "This parifh lyes betwixt the parishes of Pafley"
Sometimes the "s" has been transcribed correctly, and sometimes it has been
interpreted incorrectly as an "f"
A matter of understanding early handwriting, and printer's type setting.

Where we did not really have that problem, [it was settled later in the
peace,] although I have descended from 2 Families of different RUSSELL's and
occasionally we see a signature that could be interpreted as either Rusfell
or Ruffell
