As a follow up to this, many thanks for the excellent response my
question received. Sorry for the delayed follow-up, but I've been
trying to make sense of a fair bit of new information.
Special thanks to Elizabeth D Smith for taking the trouble to
transcribe what looks to be a very promising census entry from
1861... and perhaps another for 1851.
Here's what I now have:-
1861 Census - 646/1-7-1
17 Albert Street Govan (now named Orkney Street)
John McDonald H M 53 Miner Inveresk
Helen McDonald W M 48 LKS Glasgow
John McDonald D U 15 Message Boy Kilpatrick
Helen McDonald D U 13 Bleacher RFW Paisley
Margaret McDonald D U 10 Scholar Dalziel
Agnes McDonald D U 8 Scholar Kilpatrick
Matthew McDonald S U 4 ---- Kilpatrick
For those of you who pointed out the parent search on the
IGI, thank you for taking the time to look for John and
Helen's children. I had already been aware of those entries,
but had been dubious as to whether they were all from the
*same* John & Helen as my Matthew McDonald. The main
obstacle was the age-range of Matthew's potential siblings
which brought into question the feasibility of a woman in her
forties giving birth to a healthy baby in the 1850s!
Based on the above census entry, it is looking more and more
likely that the children listed on the IGI search are indeed Matthew's
siblings.
I've come up with a possible explanation for the discrepancy in the
ages between the 1861 census and the IGI listings. Any thoughts
welcome:-
1831 - Marriage of John McDonald & Helen Griffin - Barony
1834 - Susannah - Barony (died before 1861?)
1836 - Barbara - Bothwell (died before 1861?)
1838 - John - Bothwell (died before 1846)
1840 - Helen - Bothwell (died before 1848)
1846 - John - Kilpatrick
1848 - Helen - Paisley, Renfrew
1851 - Margaret - Dalziel
1853 - Agnes - Kilpatrick
1856 - Matthew - Redtown, Renfrew
Also, if the 1861 census entry lists "my" McDonalds, I now
have an approximate d.o.b. for John along with a place of
birth (Inveresk).
A quick search of IGI gave the folllowing potential candidate:-
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
JOHN MCDONALD
Male
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Christening: 26 APR 1807 Inveresk With Musselburgh, Midlothian, Scotland
Parents:
Father: DUNCAN MCDONALD Family
Mother: AGNES CAMERON
You searched for: Scotland, British Isles
Father: Duncan Mcdonald, Mother: Agnes Cameron

1. MARY MCDONALD - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 13 FEB 1789 Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
2. JOHN MCDONALD - International Genealogical Index

3. AGNES MCDONALD - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 14 MAR 1787 Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Which raises another potential problem. If this is the right John McDonald, how
come none of his children were named Duncan. Or perhaps they were and they
weren't around in 1861.
This brickwall has been in place so long now, I'm in danger of being flooded
with new info! Still trying to get my head around it, but wanted to be sure the
right people received proper thanks:-
Elizabeth D Smith, Celia Melvin, Jacqui Graham, David Cawley, Barbara Stettler,
Sandy, Marie Dougan, Elizabeth Csanig, Robin.
/hug!
