I will forward this to the list as well and see if anyone out there can
make additions of corrections. Much of this information comes from a book
called The Book of Bruce by Weeks 1907.
It sounds like by this weekend there will be a discussion of the ancestors
of Robert I of Scotland on the list, so I will tell you his known
children. Robert I, King of the Scots was married twice. By his first
wife, Isabel of Mar (d/o Donald, 10th Earl of Mar) he had one daughter.
Marjory Bruce (1297-1316) - married Walter, High Steward of Scotland, Earl
of Renfrew. She is the ancestress of the Royal house of Stewart of
Scotland and England. Actually she is what made them the Royal house to
begin with the birth of her son, Robert II, King of the Scots.
By his second wife, Elizabeth de Burgh (d/o Richard de Burgh, 2nd Earl of
Ulster) he had 4 children:
Maud (Matilda) Bruce (1310-1353) who married an Thomas Isaac. I have never
read anything on this line and don't know if it has been traced.
Margaret Bruce (1315-1347) who married Robert Glenn and then William, Earl
of Southerland. Again I don't have information on this line, but I would
imagine the line of the Earl of Sutherland has been traced.
David II, King of the Scots (1324-1371) he married first Joan, Princess of
England and second Margaret Drummond (widow of Sir Rober Logie). He had no
children.
John, Prince of Scotland (1325-1326)
------------------------------------------------
My understanding is that Robert I "the Bruce" had 4 known "natural"
children by unknown mother(s).
Robert de Bruce, Earl of Ross (1303-1332) sp Helen Vipont d/o Capt. Allen
Vipont of Lochleven. This line apparently has been traced down many
generations.
The other three natural children I haven't seen any information on descendents.
Elizabeth Bruce sp. Walter Oliphant of Aberdalgy
Walter Bruce
Nigel Bruce
Other connections can be through the siblings of Robert I. Actually that
is a misnomer as only his sisters seemed to have survived with
heirs... Many of his brothers were executed by the English while fighting
for the cause of their brother.
His sister Isabel Bruce was married 3 times - 1st. Thomas Randolph of
Strathdon, 2nd. to the Earl of Athol (I will have to look further to get a
family name on this one) and 3rd Alexander Bruce (probably a cousin, I will
have to look into that). I know she had children by her first husband.
Mary Bruce married first Sir Niel Campbell of Lochow and second Alexander
Frazer of Cowie, Chamberland of Scotland.
Christiana Bruce married first Gratney, Earl of Mar, second Sir Christopher
Seton, third Sir Andrew Moray of Bothwell, Gov. of Scotland for King David/
Matilda Bruce married Hugh, Earl of Ross.
Elizabeth Bruce married Sir William Dishington of Ardross.
Margaret Bruce married Sir William Carlyle of Torthorwald.
and Margery Bruce married Sir David de Breschin.
I too would love to know more about these lines. The lines of the Earls of
Mar should be cousins and that of the Earls of Ross seems to entwine with
the Bruces as well.
----------------------------------------
Robert I King of the Scots' aunts and uncles may also be a connection.
William Bruce (his father's brother), married Elizabeth de Sully (d/o
Raymond de Sully)
Bernard Bruce, Baron of Connington married into the famous family of Clare
- Alicia de Clare. Second marriage was to Constance de Morleyn.
Isabella Bruce married John Fitz Marmaduke
Alosia Bruce married Sir Nigel Graham (probably where the Nigel names comes
in as a given name)
Christina Bruce married Patrick Dunbar, Earl of March and one of the
competitors. The Dunbar family is large and active in the history of
Scotland, carrying the titles of Earls of Dunbar and March.
This latter entry has caused me some confusion. I assume this to be
Patrick "Black Beard" Earl of March who was a competitor and I assume that
this is the great-grandson of Ada of Scotland and Patrick Dunbar 5th Earl
of Dunbar - but how do they connect?
Well that is enough to chew on and start a conversation anyway.
