Hi Marilyn
Sorry about the delay in replying.
Uncle Jack (John Thomson Wilkie) qualified as a Chemist and Druggist in 1912. His father, also a Chemist had run the business until he died in 1906. Uncle Jack served in the First World War and he resumed his work as a chemist when he returned but we don't know exactly when. His registered address was changed to 25 High Street in 1934 and he is shown as the registered owner of a pharmacy at this address in the first Register of Premises in 1936.
If you let me know what family names you are interested in I will ask my Dad if he recognises any of them. I have a note book that belonged to my Grandmother (Uncle Jack's sister) which contains names and addresses of friends and family at the time of the First World War. I will check for any matches, if you like.
Have you tried the Borders Family History Society (www.bordersfhs.org.uk)? or Scotland's People (www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk)?
Best Wishes
Margaret
