Hi List,

Perhaps (fingers crossed) Tony Gott, Stuart Goudie or Marlene Goudie (or
a BRUCE or a MOWAT or any other listener) can assist with this enquiry.
I'm wanting to verify a connection of my family line to another
descendant from the "Braefield Goudies" - George - who emigrated to
Australia settling in country Victoria and ultimately to the original
old family of Gavin GOUDIE (Gawane GADIE) of Lugansetter, in the parish
of Dunrossness.

Although it may contain some errors, the book - History of the Goudie
Family & Variants, from 800-1919, by Mahlon Gowdy - in part recorded the
following:

Gavin[1] GOUDIE (Gawane GADIE) of Lugansetter, living in 1576 (died
c1600), married Helen MOWAT. She died his widow in March 1603. Her sons
John[1] & Erasmus were confirmed as executors of her estate on 18 August
1613. John[1] carried on the family and c1600 he and his brother Erasmus
moved to Clumlie. There is not much further said of Erasmus but John[1]
married Marjory BRUCE, daughter of Gilbert BRUCE of Muness in
Dunrossness and Margaret BRUCE of Sumburg (said to be recorded in the
BRUCE Pedigree, Shetland).

The author then mentions another son of Gavin[1] GOUDIE and Helen MOWAT
- Gavin[2] GOUDIE d: Oct 1629 and who married Jewdeth/Judith MOWAT, they
had issue Magnus[1], John[2] and Oliver. (When you read the full text
in the book it appears that this Gavin[2] may have been the son of
John[1] GOUDIE & Marjory BRUCE.)

It is further suggested Magnus[1] GOUDIE may have become the ancestor of
another branch of the Goudie family elsewhere in Shetland, and there is
no other mention of Oliver GOUDIE - does anyone have further information
on these two? John[2] GOUDIE and his wife (unknown) had issue Gavin[3]
and William[1].

Gavin[3] and William[1] GOUDIE "paid scat duty for one half of the
township of Clumlie, then held by them as per rental of the Lordship of
Zetland for crop 1716-1717". No further mention of William[1] but
Gavin[3] GOUDIE was living in 1738 and had issue four sons:
- Gilbert[1] d: c1775, married Isabel HENRYS and had issue seven
children, see further;
- Gavin[4], English interpreter in Russia;
- William[2] was of Troswickness and father of John[3] GOUDIE, Navy
Contractor in Edinburgh;
- Magnus[2] may have moved to Catfirth in Nesting.

Children of Gilbert[1] GOUDIE and Isabel HENRYS are:
- Gavin[5] b: 1748 Clumlie, d: 1812, m: 4 Sept 1792 to Margaret or
Marion and had issue five children, see further;
- Olla;
- Henry b: 14 Oct 1762 died young;
- Jane;
- Agnes;
- Martha;
- Marion.

Children of Gavin[5] GOUDIE and Margaret or Marion are:
- Gilbert[2] b: 20 Feb 1796, d: 10 Dec 1891, m: Jane BLACK who d: 12
Sept 1878 - this Gilbert[2] built the house at Braefield in 1863-64 and
had issue ten children, see further;
- George[1] b: 17 July 1799, d: 1842 Edinburgh;
- Andrew[1] b: 6 June 1802, d: 10 Oct 1870;
- Gavin[6] d: 31 Dec 1869;
- Margaret[1] b: 23 Dec 1793, d: Sept 1878 South Shields, England,
married a Gavin GOUDIE and she had issue eight children (- not further
mentioned in this enquiry).

Children of Gilbert[2] GOUDIE and Jane BLACK are:
- Gavin[7] b: 1 Nov 1820, d: 31 July 1848;
- Jane d: 11 July 1907;
- Mary-Anne m: Thomas MOUAT;
- George[2] b: 13 Sept 1830, emigrated to Australia in 1854, m: 10 Sept
1861 to Caroline Ashton at Amherst, Victoria Aust., d: 16 May 1906
Birchip Victoria, he had issue eight children of which I will not
elaborated further here. (His descendants are those I currently seek
verification of any connection.);
- Margaret[2] married Thomas MAINLAND;
- Andrew[2] married Jemine THOMSON and had issue four children (- not
further mentioned in this enquiry).
- Peter d: in Australia 1853 aged 17
- Elizabeth d: 13 April 1912
- Gilbert[3] died in infancy
- Gilbert[4] b: 23 April 1843, m: (1) Anna Anderson on 7 Sept 1881, they
had issue two children (- not further mentioned in this enquiry), and
(2) Anna Margarita Jean Young on 18 Nov 1916.

My own line and that of a "new found" third cousin (once removed) living
in South Australia goes back to Robert GOUDIE b: 1730 of Clumlie who
married Marion LESLIE on 17 Dec 1754. This cousin has provided two
theories, one version held by her father Robert Walter GOUDIE
(1864-1957) was that Robert GOUDIE of Clumlie was the son of William[1]
above, whose brother Gavin[3] descendants appear above, the other
version was held by her grandfather Robert GOUDIE (1827-1921) that he
was the son of an unknown son of Magnus[1], brother of John[2] and
Oliver. Either way all above will be kin!! Can anyone confirm either of
these versions?

Also the theory that Gavin[2] who married Jewdeth/Judith MOWAT,
potentially being the son of John[1] who married Marjory BRUCE and not
his brother is also shared by this relative who has provided me with her
ancestral information which marries with that taken from the above
mentioned book. Can anyone confirm this?
