I simply guess because I don't know. Slater is a person who slates roofs
and in Scotland slates were also known as sclates hence Slater, Sclater and
the variations Slatter and Sclatter. I have not come across the name Salter
in Shetland but it is probably there. It would also be an occupational name
in one who salts meat , fish etc to preserve it.
I have found that a lot of names seem to be spelt according to what the
listener thought it sounded like but I think the jump from Slater to Salter
would never be similar enough.
Any other ideas out there?
