I regret Butch was not even a twinkle in anyone's eye when the family left
the area. His grandparents, who were amongst the first Mormon converts in
Scotland, left the area soon after their marriage and settled in
Newcastle-upon-Tyne. It was there that Butch's mother was born. The family
emigrated from there en-mass when his mother was about 12 years old. She
grew up with a young man named Maximilliam Parker, whom she later married.
Robert Leroy Parker ('Butch Cassidy' to the rest of the world) was their
eldest son.
I regret pistol-making at Doune had ceased some time before his grandmother
left there - her father having been the custodian at Doune Castle. In that
post he was succeeded by his son-in law who remained there until he hanged
himself following the death of his wife. Another sister married a local
coachman, John MacFarlane, who died early and is buried in Stirling
Cemetery. His wife and family left in the local Mormon exodus and
remarried in Utah. Descendants in the US are about to erect a stone in his
memory - despite the fact he died in 1846.
Sorry to ramble on, but I find the whole saga quite interesting and it
might also prove of interest to some others
Regards
Tony
