Gloria,
To answer your question first.
From 1851-1853 the 8th Kaffir War was being fought in South Africa. However it is possible that James was not there. The Kaffir Wars were just before Crimea.
www.it-serve.co.uk/argylls/service93rd.php
gives a detailed timeline of the history of the 93rd Regiment of Foot, the Highland Regiment of Foot and the 93rd Sutherland Highlanders, from 1799 till 1882 when the Sutherlands combined with the Argylls.
Around the time of the census (March/April) the barracks were located in Edinburgh and were preparing to move to Glasgow. My suggestion would be to look at census records for Edinburgh first then try Glasgow. If he does not show up in either he may well have been in transit.
A good potted history can be found at www.armynavyairforce.co.uk/argyll_&_sutherland_highlanders.htm
www.argylls.co.uk is the home site for The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
When you are looking for information The Sutherland Highlanders will be referred to as the 2nd. Battalion.

Battle honours of the Scottish Regiments 1680-1913, is an interesting site to get information from.
Hope this helps,
