Wow, what a quick response, Liz!
I was really quite happy with my name change theory until I looked at the
Ross family as they were in 1881 from your census details. Some things are a
little off... Robertina Walker Black Ross is listed as being 9 years old
which means she would have been born in 1871/2, not 1870. And Catherine's
age is off by a couple of years, too. Still, there is no Euphemia Jr. listed
in the 1881 Ross household so my theory may yet hold water.
Dr. Robert Walker Black died on May 27, 1870. He was 49 years old. I don't
know what caused his death. He left a wife, aged 44, and 7 children ranging
in age from 5 to 17. And I guess Tongue lost their doctor.
So, yes, perhaps he did something good for the Ross family and they honoured
him posthumously by renaming their daughter Euphemia Buchan Ross after him -
or they had another baby in 1871/2 and named her after him. I guess we'll
never know for sure. And we may never know what happened to the baby
Euphemia born in 1870. Intriguing though, isn't it?

What if Euphemia was ill as an infant and Dr Robert saved her life, or her
mother's? How old was Dr Robert Black when he died?
Bets wishes,
Liz
