G'day all.
There has been a lot of discussion recently about the monument, and the
following that the Countess and her husband enjoyed from the people of
Sutherland.
I lived in The Philippines from 1980 to 1986. President Ferninand Marcos was
deposed, early in 1986, and up to the time he was deposed, Filipinos would
line the roads and cheer as he went by, all the time knowing what a despot
he was. I couldn't work it out at first but I believe the reasons were:
1. It was something that had always been done, and they considered it was
expected of them.
2. They were concerned of the consequences if they failed to do this.
Further, the henchmen between the first family and the people were also
despots and were not correctly keeping the President informed of the plight
of the rural people - and I say that, no way in the defence of Marcos.
I see many parallels between this situation, and the possible situation in
Sutherland in the first few decades of the 19th Century.
The monument is a monument to tyranny and should stand.

unqualified to really comment from a distance
