A possibility from a list of visitors to Strathpeffer mineral well in 1817
(Inverness Journal 5 Sept 1817):
Miss C. Hoves , Kinloss [mistake for Hoyes]
Miss R Hoyes, Kinloss
Lewis Hoyes, Fores [Forres]
Good place for matches to be made.

Many thanks Rena and others. Chambers dictionary shows SSC
to stand for
Solicitor of the Supreme Court - this sounds highly likely.
I have since
found that Lewis Hoyes was married to a Janet Fraser in
Dornoch. Would
anyone have access to any lists which would show if Lewis
was a solicitor?
Or suggest where I may look?

Hi Christine,

Is it possible that Lewis HOYES was an Anglican priest? SSC
may stand
for Societas Sanctae Crucis, the Society of the Holy Cross,
founded in
1855. See: http://www.sanctaecrucis.org/
