Ian,
The 1871 census for Ontario is indexed and the index can be found at www.archives.ca. This is the website for the National Archives of Canada. I have checked the index for 1871, index of the head of household, and there is no James. I wonder if it is possible that the family emigrated sometime between 1871
and 1880 to Canada and after the deaths of the two boys, the family returned home. If this were the case, the family should appear in the 1881 census in Canada. However, given that the census is not indexed and given Toronto was made up of a number of different wards, without knowing the ward it would indeed be
a very lengthy search. However, death records for Ontario from 1869 to 1928, perhaps even 1929, are available at the Family History centres. Not knowing the ward, it might involve a bit of a search but it would be easier than the search of the 1881 census. Have you checked the 1881 census for Scotland. If the
parents appear there, then it is a mystery! You refer to the James McBeath mentioned above. I don't see mention of him above. Would James have been with the British Army in Canada? Lots of questions and not too many answers for you!
In the British 1881 census, I found a Neil McBeath, b in Clyne, aged 19, apprenticing to an Alexander Fraser, Blacksmith in Dornoch. I found only one James McBeath, born in Clyne: James McBeath, wife Johan, both born in Clyne, living in Loth, aged 42 and a farm servant. If this is your James, then there is a
mystery! If this age is correct, I doubt he would be the correct James. He would be too young to have a son Adam who would have been about 27 if still alive at that time. But we all know that census records were not always correct and Johan's age was given as 45, old enough to have had a son born in 1854. If
you want a copy of these 1881 records, I will send them to you.
I don't know if any of these facts help, but who knows!
Let me know if I can help.
