I am new to your list and this is my first post regarding this family.
The information gathered came from the book "The Stephen Lacy Family of
Goochland Co. VA by Lawler" and a genealogy of the Lacy/Ross families by
Morrison.
Any help on finding the family of Hugh Ross and Margaret
MacDonald/McDonald would be appreciated.
I descend from their daughter Jean/Jane who md. Thomas Lacy.
Thanks,
Becky

This is the story I have of Hugh Ross.

Hugh Ross, the immigrant ancestor of the Ross family which is also the
subject of this genealogy, was born in Scotland, near Edinburgh, and in
Sutherland Shire, Scotland, married Margaret McDonald. They, with two
and probably three children, immigrated to the Colonies ca. 1771, and
settled in Anson Co., NC, where three and possibly four of their
children were born, and where they lived and died, he leaving a will
dated November 18, 1793. The dates of the births and deaths of Hugh
Ross and his wife, Margaret McDonald, and the date of their marriage are
unknown, but he died after March 30 1798. They were the parents of six
children, who are named in his will, of record in Will Book A, p. 37, in
Anson Co., N. C.
Hugh Ross was left an orphan at five or six years of age. His father,
when on his death bed, put him in the care of a nobleman, in whom he had
confidence.
He lived with the nobleman, who, experiencing ill health and knowing
that he could not live to raise the boy, decided to apprentice him to a
tailor, to learn the trade. This he did. After Hugh Ross completed his
apprenticeship,
he practiced his trade in Edinburgh, and in Sutherland Shire, where he
gained
note for his fine workmanship.

It was while in Sutherland Shire he met the woman who was to become his
wife
