Subject: [SUT] Scotland Free Census Project - Update
Date: Wed, 02 Oct 2002 10:46:12 -0700

The Scotland Free Census Project is part of the larger UK Free Census
project (aka FreeCEN) that aims to transcribe all UK 19th century census
returns to create an on-line 'free-to-view' database. The project was
launched in April 2002 and to date has 6 active county projects and another
12 due to be underway by the end of the year. Each county project is
beginning with the 1841 census returns and will move on to other years at
the discretion of the county organizer.

I am currently trying to recruit organizers for all open counties,
including Sutherland. Organizers are responsible for recruiting and
supervising a team of volunteers to transcribe their assigned county. To
be an organizer, you just need some time, a computer and access to a
microfilm or microfiche reader. All other materials are supplied by
FreeCEN, including software, microfilm/fiche, and plenty of advice and
instruction.

If you are interested in organizing a project for Sutherland or another
county, please contact me at . More information on
the project can be found at http://www.speakeasy.org/~jgribble/scotland.html

Thank you,
