Hi Neil

I forget the exact date, but Catholics were proscribed until sometime around
1790. Of course they still existed, but underground, and legally they were
supposed to register banns of marriage with the Session clerk of the Church
of Scotland.

Regards
Ian.

I have just read that in England, at least, between 1754 and 1837 ONLY
marriages solemnised in the Church of England were legal - with exceptions
for
Quakers and for Jews. Any children from a Catholic marriage were therefore
bastards under English law.

What was the situation in Scotland? There had to be Catholics in
Wigtownshire.
