John,
William Hartley was married to Jane (Jean) McCans. She is the person listed
in the 1841 census. She died between 1841 and 1851 as William is listed as
a widower in the 1851 census. William died 13 Nov 1859 at Hillhead, Leswalt
and was buried in the churchyard of Leswalt. There are no burial entries in
the Leswalt parish. Diana Henry looked in the Leswalt Cemetery Monument
book and there were no Hartleys or McCans listed. I understand from an
article that I read on Wigtownshire pages last July by James Heron that a
lot of the old, fallen-down tombstones, from the Leswalt Cemetery were
gathered up and used for fill when the seawall at Stranraer was being built.

Abridgments of Sasines 1781-1868, Third Series 1831-1840

John Ross in Portslogan and Martha Wither, his spouse, and James Ross in
Craigslave, and Agnes Wither, his spouse Seised for their respective
interests, Mar. 17, 1838, in the east half of a House and Garden in Hillhead
of Stranraer, par. Leswalt,---under burden of the liferent of Jean McCans,
and William Hartley, Mariner, Stranraer, her husband,---on Disp. by John
McCans. weaver, Hillhead of Stranraer, to the said Jean McCans, and William
Hartley, Sept. 17, 1804; and Disp. and Assig. by them, Dec. 23, 1837,

The Janet Hartley living in Newton in the 1841 census, I am sure is my GGG
grandmother who was married to David Hartley. In the 1851 census you will
find her living with Roseann Mair and her husband James.

I have been trying to find the connection to these families.
