Karen, I also want lookups to innkeepers licences but it seems that for the
former Wigtownshire records don't exist at all.

I've looked in the book "victuallers Licences" (Federation of Family History
Societies) and records for S.W. Scotland look generally weak. Nothing in the
former Wigtownshire.

I've had a professional researcher look in Edinburgh for Stranraer records
but without success.

I suppose it's just possible that libraries in the area may hold ancient
records that may or may not be catalogued. Or a record my have been referred
to in old Burgh Council Records and these do exist and certainly at
Stranraer. In good handwriting too!

A James Tait appears to have been licensee at the Red Lion, Wigtown as
printed in the 1837 Pigot's Directory of Wigtownshire. Does that help?

Ian
