Hi Noreen,

As indicated in my message of August 30, I have transcribed the two
relevant records from the Whithorn OPR:

1817
"August 18th / William Burnie and Jane Hannah in Whithorn"

1833
"August 12 / Septr 29 / Jane Lawful daughter of William Burnie and Jane
Hannah Whithorn"

The marriage record does not state if this was date of marriage, or that of
proclamation. It was usual that the marriage followed within days of the
third calling of banns, it is reasonable to expect no more than 2-3 weeks
difference.
In the baptism record, the first date is that of birth, and the second is
that of baptism. The context of "Whithorn" is that the couple were resident
in the Burgh (Town) of Whithorn at the time.

This family, or part thereof, seem to be still in Whithorn at the time of
the 1841 census, but in 1851, William and some children may be at Close off
High Street, Gatehouse of Fleet, (Househod No 2/9, Parish of Girthon, in
the D&GCIS transcript). If this is the same William BURNIE, he has given
some place of birth information which contradicts that given in 1841.
Despite the differences, I am inclined to think this is the same man. If
so, he has remarried, and that would appear to be to Agnes JOHNSTONE, 09
Jul 1848, parish of Girthon.

You wrote, (off-list), that you had the family in both 1841 and 1851. I
guess these are the records you referred to?
You also mentioned not having found a death of Jane HANNAH. It seems she
died prior to 1848. That could have been at Whithorn, Girthon, or
elsewhere, perhaps Creetown. Creetown had a large granite quarry, so there
would have been employment for a mason, and the census data suggests
William spent some time there.

Regards,
Bruce
