"The Way We Were"
Compiled from the Archives by Patrick Knox.
"Shoemakers strike - a large number of journeymen shoemakers in Stranraer struck work on Monday last for an increase in wages. It appears they have demanded an advance of 6d per pair on all kinds of men and women's boots and shoes, which the masters are unwilling to comply with - alleging that owing to the present rise in the price of leather and viewing the interests of their customers, they would not be justified in acceding to the full terms demanded. Neither party are willing to give way, and their the affair rests; but it is expected that the strike will be of short duration as there is a prospect that matters will soon be amicably settled."
