Hi Catherine,

I'd try a few things, one being, joining a Clan MacKay society with genealogical help, or getting the famous genealogist Bill Lawson of the Isle of Harris (http://billlawson.com/) to help you out with research. If none of that goes anywhere, read a lot of books and maybe go to the Stornoway Library on the Isle of Lewis, Scotland and look through their stuff. You must note that having ancestral charts back to 1780 is fairly good!
