the article is quite long & tells of pioneer life.
I will here abbreviate a bit, just to share about her children, whom are never named.
In 1880 rumors of the wonderful climate, soil, and opportunitites for homemaking reached Pontiac & Rowe Illinois. Mrs. Margaret Knutson, a widow with seven children, decided to wait until some of her friends & neighbors had become established & who would then be able to advise her whether or not it might be a good move. Their pastor at Rowe, Rev Ole Tjomsland & family, with Mrs Knutson's eldest daughter had departed for Dakota Territory the previous year.
She came west with a couple of neighbors the following year in the fall. All were favorably impressed with the country, they all took claims.
Mrs. Knutson, on her return to Illinois borrowed $200. & after a couple months, she with her two youngest children & old friends chartered a car for the new country, the destination being Mitchell, Dakota Territory. At Mtchell they met by Mrs. Knutson's daughter, Rev Tjomsland & Barney Helgerson, an old friend from Rowe, Ill. She inquired whter the town was locate? Mr Helgerson informed her THIS was Mitchell.
They bundled themselved up with quilts over their heads, in their wagon and continued on the journey to the home of Rev Tjomsland located 18 miles northwest of Mitchell.
Other names in the article, are Mr & Mrs Ole Kirkus & 3 children from Rowe, Illinois. James T Jacobson, John Tolleen & Thorwald Myers, all bachelors, stayed with her while completing their claim shanties.
A grandchild lived at Stickney, SD, Lucille Aszmus.
article was written by Mrs. Martha Allen. (more of it than I wrote)
