The Sun, San Bernardino, CA - November 1, 2004
F. RICHARD “DICK” BRYANT spent his life tending to flowers because he believed plants and humans alike should be firmly rooted in the ground and showered with care. “Flowers were just him,” said his wife of 50 years, Caroline Bryant. “He loved the outside, he loved gardening and he loved flowers.” Bryant, a San Bernardino County resident, died of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis October 20 at Assistencia Villa in Redlands. He was 73.
He was born January 21, 1931 in Huron, S.D. and moved to the San Bernardino area with his family in his early teens. In 1949 Bryant enrolled at the University of Redlands. It was there that he met his future wife, Caroline. The couple married in 1954. He graduated from U of R with a bachelor’s degree in 1955. He also attended Berkeley Baptist Divinity School and United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio.
The couple settled in Highland in 1959. They also lived in Rialto and Fontana. Bryant was co-owner of F & W Smith Co., in San Bernardino and he operated the Flower Pot in San Bernardino for five years. He ran Bryant Landscape Maintenance for 10 years. He was a member of the Community Hospital of San Bernardino Auxiliary for 30 years and often worked in the gift shop. He was a volunteer for Santa Claus Inc., in San Bernardino for more than 30 years.
“You could say that one of his hobbies was children, especially his grandchildren,” said his wife. Bryant enjoyed taking his grandchildren to the movies and Castle Park. His family described him as a loving and outgoing person who drew people to him. “All the people who ministered to him made it a point to some say goodbye,” said his wife. “That was the way he always seemed to affect people.”
Other survivors include three sons, Gary Bryant of Victorville, CA, David Bryant of San Bernardino, and Robert Bryant of Rising Sun, MD; two brothers, Willard Bryant of Virginia and Jim Bryant of South Dakota; a sister, Jean Hale of South Dakota; and seven grandchildren.
Services were held. Arrangements were handled by Bobbitt Memorial Chapel in San Bernardino. Donations may be made to Bethany Presbyterian Church, 1773 N. Riverside Ave., Rialto, CA 92376, or Santa Claus Inc., P. O. Box 2642, San Bernardino, CA 92406.
