THOMAS GARVEY was born in Islandeady (Village or Parish?), County Mayo, Ireland, and died in Mayo, (near Buckingham), Papineau Co., Quebec, Canada. He married ANNA BURKE Abt. 1800 in Ireland. She was born in Islandeady (Village or Parish?), County Mayo, Ireland, and died in Mayo, (near Buckingham), Papineau Co., Quebec, Canada.

Notes for THOMAS GARVEY:
RE: The Ireland locale of either Thomas Garvey & Ann Bourke or Thomas Garvey & Mary Burke. Both families immigrated to Mayo, Buckingham, Province Quebec (PQ), Canada where they owned and operated farms. Our Garvey family is from either the village of Islandeady or the Parish of Islandeady, County Mayo, Ireland. (Islandeady is situated 5 miles SSW of Castlebar - 1/2 way on the main Castlebar & Westport road. A PQ parish marriage record places Thomas Garvey & Anne Bourke and their son Edward in Islandeady, County Mayo, Ireland (Ref. St-Gregoire de Naziance Buckingham, repertoire des baptemes, mariages et sepultures, 1836-1862, marriage of Edward Garvey to Bridget Sherlock)

RE: The Village of Mayo (near Buckingham), Papineau County, Povince Quebec, Canada.
1. The homestead of Thomas Garvey and Ann Bourke can be located on the National Topographic System (NTS) map of Canada chart no. 31G11 Thurso at UTM Grid 702555. It's a single building next to a field. In reality the structure is an old cabin which was their home. Today it's a shed that houses goats and other farm animals. Tom Garvey's bushlot extends north to Garvey Lake. Garvey Lake is actually a pond-like wet land, surrounded by alder bushes.
2. Mayo is about 5 miles from Buckingham, Province Quebec. It is a hilly, wooded area with rough farmland. I suppose its population would be in the neighborhood of 50 people, spread over a fairly large area. It's a pretty place with St. Malachy's Catholic Church the center point. It is said that the area appealed to the Irish from County Mayo, Ireland, because it reminded them of the homeland they had left - hilly and green. At one time it had a small school and a small cheese factory. The cemetery is a short distance from the church and it's well - maintained. It was opened in 1888. Prior to this, the people of Mayo were buried in nearby towns of Thurso or Buckingham

RE: Why Irish Catholics settled in Province Quebec.
Outside of Quebec in English Canada the Protestant majority was very suspicious of Irish Catholic emigrants and frowned upon them. A lot of the Irish (not all) were poor and they were stigmatized with the painful stereotype of being lazy, drunken and unwilling to control their high birth rate. (It took generations to dispel these ugly stereotypes.) Even though they didn't speak French, they were welcomed by Quebec (even during the Great Irish Famine years of 1845 - 1851) for basically two reasons: They shared a common religion with the French and they shared a common resistance to the English. Back then, citizenship involved the despised British Crown. All of this made it difficult for many Irish emigrants to adopt the political culture of English Canada. But, over time, and through hard work, social and financial ascendancy and education, this resistance melted.

RE: Other possible children of Thomas Garvey and Anna Burke.
Patricia Meyers of Worth, Illinois, whose great-grandmother was Bridget Garvey from Castlebar, Ireland,
believes she has identified two more children of Thomas Garvey and Anna Burke: 1)William Garvey and 2)Catherine Garvey. ( William stayed in Ireland and Catherine immigrated to the U.S.) She (Patricia) says 1)William was born about 1850 in Knockbaun, County Mayo, and married Catherine Mayock. They had a son, William Garvey, who, in turn, had a son John Garvey, whose descendants Patricia has managed to contact. Patricia also says that the other child, 2)Catherine Garvey, married Michael Gallagher and had a child, Ann Gallagher, in Ireland before immigrating to the U.S. They settled in Dekalb County, Illinois. Furthermore, 1)William was the the baptismal sponsor of his baby niece, Ann Gallagher...Extracted from e-mail messages by Patricia Meyers in June 2001.

Children of THOMAS GARVEY and ANNA BURKE are:
