Amy,
What years are you talking about here?
(Side notes:
a. years -- even really estimates/guesses -- help as search techniques differ for different time periods. With email, we can't see if you are 20 years old and you great grandfather was born in 1920, or if you are 70 and your great-grandfather
was born in 1870 <vbg>.
b. also, listing where you have looked will help others know what to suggest & to not send you places you've already been.)
For example, if any of these people would have been born before 1920, have you found them in the census? If not, that would be the best place to start. In many cases, there are statewide indices for the 1900, 1910 and 1920 censuses, which will
help if you don't have a place any more specific than the Carolinas.
Have you gotten your grandfather's death certificate? Depending on when/where he died and who the informant was, that may list his mother's name. Ditto for his marriage certificate (actually better in many cases, as the participants were
usually the informants) and for his father's marriage certificate.
Hope this helps,
BJ
