My name is Betty Bragg Bernard and my email is . I would like to be included in the new group. My Sears family appears to be from southwestern Virginia and who knows where before that. Maybe the Carolinas (where several religious groups disembarked).

Subject: [SEARS] Our Brethren Sears Family

Dear Cousins and Friends,
I am pleased to make the announcement of some exciting news. Pamela Stage of Walnut Creek, CA and I (David Kent Coy of Decatur, IL) have collaborated to create a new Sears Website on MyFamily.com. The name of the new website is: "OUR BRETHREN SEARS FAMILY."

You are among the first to be invited and I hope you will want to participate. This website, which is up and running, will provide us the opportunity to share family news, photographs, special events, and especially family history and genealogy. I imagine the scope of the website to eventually expand to include many of the various families that are connected by location, church affiliation, and marriage, etc. This might include the Sappenfields, Hon/Honns, Hostetlers, Rowlands, Clarks, Boardmans, Kerns, Hartman/Hardmans, Trowbridges, Conrads, Keithleys, Leathermans, etc., etc.

Pamela Stage has reviewed the old Sears Family stories that many of us relied on for so many years and has un-covered new information which oftentimes, refutes and corrects the information we had. She has made multiple trips into Kentucky and Indiana and discovered ancient old documents that have laid in dusty courthouse attics and basements that change the Sears Family History as we had previously accepted it. It is more complete and interesting than I would have ever imagined.

I have researched the Sears Family since July of 1968, when my elderly great-grandmother, Maude Luesta (Sears) Strader (1882-1969) led me to the graves of her grandparents, Enoch William Sears and Margaret A. (Hostetler) Sears in Van Voorhis "Deer Creek" Cemetery, Bowdre Township, Douglas County, Illinois. I will serve as Administrator of the new website for the time being.

If any of you are familiar with the MyFamily.com websites - then I hope you will agree that they are fairly easy to navigate and offer much of what we need to share our various family news and histories. You must be invited to join and the website will issue to you an invitation with a computer-generated Username and a Password. I have clicked the site into my favorites on my computer and the computer remembers my Username and Password, which makes it easier to access. There are also email updates sent to you whenever there is new information posted to the site. There is a cost to sponsor this website, of course, and you will be offered the opportunity to share the expenses, but membership and access to the site will remain free - at least until January of 2008.

We are very excited about this and want to share it with everyone. The more people interested in the Sears and related families - the better. Who knows what we might learn? We have designated this the "OUR BRETHREN SEARS FAMILY" Website to set it aside from the Sears family which originated in England and to show our family's close affiliation with the early Brethren Church.

I will be discontinuing the Sears Family Interest Group email list, that I personally sent out, in favor of this new website, but hope all of you will want to join the website. I will be transferring all the data from the Sears Family Interest Group onto the "OUR BRETHREN SEARS FAMILY" Website as soon as I can. I have already posted some photographs and genealogy data on the new site - just to get us started.

Please respond to this email by letting me know if you want to receive an email invitation to join with us in this exciting new venture. I will need your complete name and the email address that you want to have used. Then I will send out the email invitation to the website. If you know of other relatives and genealogists interested in the Sears and related families, please let me know and send their complete name and email address so I can invite them also.

I will also be posting similar news releases on various websites and mailing lists, but you only need to let me know one time that you are interested. If you can think of somewhere else where this news should be posted, please let me know. Thanks.

Sincerely,
David Kent Coy of Decatur, IL
