Thanks to all who have replied thus far!

I checked the exhibits in TMG and when I right click on an image and select
properties, the drop down list shows it as "External Image File" and at the
bottom it lists the path/filename to the photo on my local hard drive.

To do a new test, I created a brand new site and used the "Standard" theme.
After creating the site, I immediately "built" the site without making any
changes other than selecting the grid style. No photos were included in the
resulting site. I then switched to Narrative without making any other
changes and built the site and the photos do show up. In the "build log"
file for the grid site, it shows the zero Exhibits were copied and in the
build log for the Narrative site, it lists each individual image filename
that was copied.

I'll keep experimenting, but I'm not sure what's left to try! :(
(It's got to be something on my end though since the grid site shows photos
for other folks!)

I don't know that it matters, but I just realized I forgot to list my
software versions.
Windows 98SE
IE 6.0SP1
Second Site v1.3 Build 00
TMG v5.05 (reindexed database and optimized as part of test.)
