OK, based on my straw clutching, :-) I've just downloaded IE7 again and done
a re-installation. I CAN NOW SEE my site(s) - with the cut-off of the left
margin at the start for the menu line, as you've seen. It looks like the
header background is going over it - but only on the main page (??). The
layout is the same as all the other pages (all inherit, from the default 1 Col
LC Border)
More investigation is called for - any ideas?

I can see a wide selection of the other site's main page (all I tried)...
Anyone else using graphics buttons on the Plain theme?
I can't see my site, except for the background and full left border - and the
picture on the main page - in either IE7 or using "view this page in IE tab"
in Firefox. I can't even see my local pages, (even a new build) including an
old test site I haven't updated for a while, so it isn't a server problem. I
wonder what is causing the left border to stop at the menu button line when
you view it?
I've just unzipped my old SS1 site and I can read that OK in IE7.
I can't see anything obvious in the "view source"... Using a local site, If I
remove:
<!--[if IE 7]>
<style type="text/css">@import url(ie7.css);</style>
<![endif]-->
I lose the left border and picture. The ie7.css file is there in the *-o
folder and contains:
#container { display: inline-block; }
a.ext { background-image: none !important; padding-right: 0; }
ul.menutop li, ul.menubottom li { white-space: normal; }"
I can't see anything obvious in the code - was there a recent patch to IE7???
(said clutching at straws)
