TO REUNION OF SEWELLS gathering in GA, attn: Wayne: Can anyone say if our
Martha Sewell was sister or kin to your ancestor? She married c1726/7 to
Francis Durant in SumterSC then lived in Marion and Waccamaw SC, to
Beaufort-Port Royal SC, and her husband, dau and 3 sons went to Savannah
and eventually to TX. Believe she died 1733-5, not sure if in SC or near
Savannah.
One researcher said found one record giving her name at marriage as
Zuill (our family had carried down her name as Sewell, however there was a
merchant at nearby Willtown, SC named Zuill who was said to be "from Belpon,
North of England" so COULD have been connection, and possibly a phonetic
version of Sewell..
Martha SEWELL Durant's children were: Mary Ruth, died age 4 in 1732
at 'Oatlands', Waccamaw SC and buried on Turkey Hill Plantation; My line,
Eliza Jane b1729 in "Marlboro, Prince Georges, SC", md at Cherokee Hill in
Savannah in 1747 to Wilson Conner COOPER, lived @Coopersville, Effingham Co
Ga,- after husband's death in 1861 followed father Francis B Durant and
brothers to Brazoria CoTX.,and finally to Bryan, Brazos Co TX; the son
Joseph may have remained in GA; son George W. to Alvin TX .; and
youngest child James Bellune Durant to Bryan, TX
Hope to hear from any of the GA Sewll reunion folks who may have some
answers about Martha or ideas to try - am now at a dead-end. Thank you for
any help.
