Subject: [SFHG] HENDERSON Blindness

Friends,

George HENDERSON was born in Glasgow but was married and spent the remainder
of his long life in Sussex. Hailsham, Seaford and Eastbourne are the places
I find him from his marriage in 1849 until his death in about 1905. I have
located a George HENDERSON in the 1841 census in Scotland. His age is
listed as 15 which would corresponds to his believed birthyear. It also
states his occupation as a basketmaker which is consistent with all of the
other records I have gathered. The interesting item I found on the 1841
census is that he was residing in the the Asylum for the Blind the night the
1841 census was taken. In researching basketmakers I've learned that
basketmaking was a very common occupation for someone with sight problems.
My question for all of you: Does anyone have any idea of what I could
search to attempt to determine if the George I found in the 1841 census is
indeed my George? Would there been any publications, societies, etc in
Sussex that might identify a "blind basketmaker?" Thanks for your help.

Best Regards,
Rachel H Howe
