Hi Rick -
And welcome to this fascinating world of Family History...

Grandfather, but his first name was William.<<<<
Need some more info, that predates 1920... Your dad's birthdate?? Your
grandfather's birthdate/where born? Grandmother's name, including maiden name
if known?? Your g.grandfather's name (if known). Any family "stories" that
might give a clue??

through entering through Rhode Island, and into CT. At that point it moves
up to the present. My problem is do not know where I tie into this tree.<<<
Which book is it? (there are several) That is probably the Philip branch,
which was just one of six main immigrant families. Others remained in Mass.,
with some branches moving into Maine prior to, and during, the Rev. War.
=====================
My standard intro...
I am descended from William (The Pilgrim) Sherman, living Marshfield, MA in
1632, with four (so far) Mayflower lines via female connections (Cooke, Doty,
Hopkins, Warren).
I maintain several Sherman databases (totalling over 40,000 names, so far) on
FTM, including one of "Unknown" ancestry, where I enter all queries I see and
then try to "matchup" about once a week for others... Have copies of several
Sherman books, listed below, and enjoy doing lookups for others.
Mary Holman's "Desc. of William Sherman of Marshfield" - 1936
Thomas T. Sherman's "Sherman Genealogies" - 1920
Bertha Stratton's "TransAtlantic Shermans" - 1951
Bertha Stratton's "Sherman and Allied Families" - 1969
William Sherman Bear's "In Search Of Caleb" - 1978
John H. Sherman's "Sherman Directories" - 1991 (four volumes)
Marge Sherman Lutzvick's "Going to Palmyra" - 1997
Marge's book is still available from her email at - - great
reading for any Sherman descendant....
I also belong to a very "neat" on line group for Sherman researchers called
Shermans of Yaxley (SOY). We have many members with great HP's and links to
Family History sites.. Please let me know if you're interested and I'll get
an intro letter enroute to you..
In addition, I have been ordering "permanent copies" of the ALL the 1880-1920
census films, and slowly entering ALL the Sherman's I can find in them,
carefully researching to tie them into previous records first... If you have
info there, I'll be glad to make copies and send them on to you.. So far I
have all films from MA,CT,NY,OH,1880/1900 KY and getting ready to order
VT,NH,RI and ME.
If you would, I'd appreciate a brief rundown of your line, from immigrant
Sherman, to you.. Email txt, Word Document, attached as a GEDCOM or FTM file,
snailmail, or any format would be fine.. Thanks..
Please let me know if I can help you with any research..
