As best I can tell, Hugh Sherwood (1632-1709/10), listed as the third generation in your post, was my 8th great grandfather.

Daniel Sherwood, son of Hugh, born May 20, 1668, Talbot Co., Md. d. August 15, 1738, Talbot Co., Md. Was Sheriff of Talbot County from 1707 to 1709, married on Dec. 26, 1689 to Mary Hopkins (Aug. 6, 1672-1746). She was the daughter of Thomas Hopkins, born c. 1646, and Elizabeth Towe, born c. 1650.

Daniel Sherwood, Jr. born June 19, 1709, Oxford, Broad Creek, Talbot Co., Md. died Sept. 19, 1767, Talbot Co. Md. married on Feb. 8, 1745, Elizabeth Rice (born Nov. 30, 1709), daughter of Ralph Howard Rice (b. 1676, Talbot Co., d. 1729, Dorchester Co., Md.) and Catherine Sherwood (born c. 1678) daughter of Hugh Sherwood. (Daniel Sherwood, Jr. and Elizabeth Rice were, therefore, first cousins, his father and her mother being siblings.)

Daniel Sherwood III, born May 20, 1749, Talbot Co., Md, died March 18, 1838, Guilford County, North Carolina. On Jan 1, 1768, he married Frances Linthicum (b. Nov. 30, 1749, d. May 4, 1806) daughter of Francis Linthicum (1709-1765) & Eleanor Williams (1717-1788) who were married in 1732. Sometime around 1778, after serving a term in the American Army during the Revolution, Daniel Sherwood, III, sold his extensive property in Talbot Co., Maryland and moved to Guilford County, NC.

Daniel III and his wife Frances were evidently close friends of Bishop Francis Asbury, who is considered the father of the Methodist Church in America. Bishop Asbury's diaries mention visiting at their plantation in North Carolina often during his preaching tours through the South. They were founding members of the Pleasant Garden Methodist Church in Guilford County, NC.

Daniel and Frances had a daughter Eleanor Sherwood, born May, 1776, who married Jeremiah Field (c. 1764-1830). They were my 4th great grandparents. Jeremiah was the son of William Field, Jr. (c. 1727-1805) and his wife Lydia, maiden name unknown. William was the son of William Field, Sr. (c. 1698-1748) and his wife Jane, maiden name unknown. William Field, Sr. died in 1748 in Lancaster, now Adams Co., Pa. Shortly after his death, his widow and children moved to Orange (later Guilford) Co., NC. One source, that I have not been able to confirm, states that William Field, Sr. was born in Calvert County, Maryland. He would have been born around 1698, as per the age of 50 being listed on his tombstone at the Old White Episcopal Church, Adams Co. Pa.

Jeremiah Field and his wife Eleanor Sherwood had a son Elswick S. Field (c. 1808-aft. 1860) who married (1831) Guilianna Lindsay (1807-1885) a daughter of William Lindsay & Elizabeth Briggs. Elswick and Guilianna had a son John Andrew Field (1846-1883) who married (1865) Mary Adeline Wilkinson (1846-1906) daughter of William Wilkinson (1816) and his wife Mary Adeline DeWeese (1824-1851).

John Andrew and Mary Adeline had a son Ernest Marion Field (1866-1904) who married (1888) Mary Rhetta Bell (1862-1947) daughter of Levi Bell (1812-1893) and Mary Jane Van Pelt (1831-1905). Ernest and Mary Rhetta had a son John Levi Field (1902-1963) my grandfather. I never knew him as he died before I was born.

I am hoping you might be able to give me further information on the Sherwood family, in particular, about the early generations.

Best Regards,

John Field Pankow
Asheville, NC
