DAVID SHIELDS third son of JOSEPH SHIELDS AND MARTHA VEATCH.
Continued from book(We Veitches, Veatches, Veaches, Veeches.

DAVID SHIELDS married Eliza Onion, June 1, 182___, in Harrison county,
Indiana. She was born January 28, 1808, in Franklin county, Ky., the
daughter of William and Catherine Onion, of Md. David Shields died August
8, 1846, in Fulton County, Illinois. Their first four children were born
in Harrison county, Indiana; the younger ones in Fulton County, Illinois.
Children:
1. Mary Ann Shields, born February 5, 1830; died August 7, 1913, Macomb,
Illinois; married Jacob Burgess. Children: Madeline, Washington M., James
David, Isamac, LeRoy, Charlotte, Roy Burgess, who died in infancy, 1862.
2. Washington M. Shields, born May 18, 1831; died January 15, 1915,
Peoria, Illinois; married Katherine Barnes. Several children, among who
was Lemueal L. and Frances Emeline.
3. Charles R. Shields, born January 28, 1833; died December 18, 1913;
married Mary C. Burgess. Children; Lettia, Stephen A., Eliza A., Dora E.,
Philip H., William, Charles R. and others, (no names).
4. Katherine Shields, born November 1, 1834, died October 10, 1847.
5. William J. shields, born August 1, 1836, died December 10, 1839.
6. Martha C. Shields, born May 12, 1838 , died December 24, 1919; married
John Langston. Children; Marie H., Merrit M., and others.
7. Eliza J. Shields, born September 14, 1840; died October 3, 1912;
married Nelson Horton. Children; Rose Lee and Lilly.
8. David P. Shields, born March 17, 1842; died April 9, 1861.
9. Joel E. Shields, born February 16, 1844; died April 14, 1845.
10. Absolem P. Shields, born November 21, 1846; died March 22, 1942;
married Tamar Asbell. Children Lucius, Mary Leona, Eugene C., Mona Olive,
Eliza E., Roscoe B.
11. Patrick Shields, born 18___; died in infancy.

ELEANOR SHIELDS (fourth child of Joseph and Martha Shields) born March
1808; married Joel A. Onion, July 4, 1827, in Harrison county, Indiana. He
was born May 21, 1804, in Franklin county, Ky., the son of William and
Catherine Onion, of Maryland. William was born march 10, 1770? and died
December 11, 1849? Catherine was born November 29, 1772, and died December
30, 1848. Joel and Eleanor were married by Rev. George Marshall, a Baptist
minister of Kentucky. They removed to Fulton county, Illinois, where they
lived the remainder of their lives. Children as follows.
1. William W. Onion, born May 28, 1828; died August 22, 1847.
2. Eliza Jane Onion, born Dec. 4, 1830; died 1901; married John M. Fike,
who in 1861 enlisted in Co. H. 3rd Reg't Illinois
Cav. and died of wounds received in battle.
3. James M. Onion, born October 19, 1832; served in an Illinois Reg't in
the Civil War; Died November 7, 1928.
4. Preston P. Onion, born August 13, 1835; served in an Illinois Reg't in
the Civil War; married Mary Buck.
5. Elizabeth S. Onion, born June 13, 1838; died October 3, 1840.
6. Martha E. Onion, born May 21, 1841; died February 2, 1843.
7. Cordelia H. Onion, born January 7, 1844; d. unmarried.
8. Jasper N. Onion, born June 4, 1846; was a soldier in the Civil War;
married Eliza J. Shelly; died Feb. 10, 1927.
9. John J. Hardin Onion, born September 17, 1848; died August 28, 1925;
married Lucy Thompson.
10. Washington Taylor Onion, born July 7, 1851; died ___; married Minerva
Offard.
